Veel mensen vragen zich af of het het waard is om je mobiele internet en telefonie te gebruiken tijdens het roamen. Laten we dat nader bekijken.

De EU-regels over roamen tegen binnenlandse tarieven houden in dat wanneer je je mobiele telefoon gebruikt tijdens het reizen van jouw eigen land naar een ander EU-land, je geen extra roamingkosten hoeft te betalen. Deze regels zijn van toepassing wanner je naar het buitenland belt (zowel mobiele als vaste telefoonnummers), tekstberichten (SMS) verstuurt en dataservices gebruikt.

Wanneer je een landsgrens doorkruist binnen de EU, zal je een bericht ontvangen van je mobiele provider om je te informeren dat je aan het roamen bent en om je te herinneren aan de ‘fair use policy’.

Als je meer tijd in jouw land besteedt dan in het buitenland, of als je jouw mobiele telefoon vaker in je eigen land gebruikt dan in het buitenland, kan je vrij roamen tegen binnenlandse tarieven, waar dan ook in de EU.

Je moet je echter bewust zijn dat er gevallen zijn waarin, na het overschrijden van een voldoende hoog limiet van data verstuurd door te roamen tegen binnenlands tarief, je extra moet betalen voor dataroaming.

Als je per boot of vliegtuig binnen de EU reist, kan je roamen tegen binnenlandse prijzen zolang je verbonden bent met een grondgebonden (‘land-based relay’) mobiele netwerk. Als mobiele services via sattelietsystemen worden aangeboden, is het roamen tegen binnenlandse tarieven niet van toepassing en zal jij moeten betalen voor ongereguleerde roaming services.
